Vilanant

Vilanant is a municipality in the Upper Empordà, surrounded by farmland and bathed by two rivers, the Manol and the Rissec. Paths and paths between forests that invite you to stroll, green meadows touched by the Tramuntana and the village of Vilanant with narrow streets and exposed stone houses. A municipality of less than 500 inhabitants, a micro-town, a place to live in peace but which at the same time invites visitors from the region and the country, summer and weekend tourists to make it their home the municipality to enjoy everything it can offer: landscape, paths, sport, nature, culture, history and tranquility.

And a municipality that hides beyond the walls of its houses the great jewel in the crown: the garrigue d’Empordà. A natural space with added value: dry stone. Very characteristic and peculiar autochthonous flora and fauna that, together with the dry stone walls, the huts and the carreradades, make this place one of the landscape wonders of the Empordà. An elevated site with natural viewpoints that really takes you into a different world where history and traditional dry stone architecture play a prominent role. A place that in the past was the modus vivendi of the inhabitants of Vilanant with the collection of olives and that nowadays, far from this concept, becomes a quiet place where the olive trees are contemplated as the most beautiful Mediterranean landscape and the Garriga it becomes a place to remember, for walks with impressive views of the Empordà plain.

Between footpaths and paths, you can go around the municipality from north to south, from east to west on hiking or mountain biking routes. It borders Llers to the North, Navata and Ordis to the South, Cistella to the West and Avinyonet de Puigventós to the East.

Medieval town, with narrow streets guarded at all times by its majestic bell tower! The Church of Santa Maria, pre-Romanesque in its beginnings and with a basilica plan of three naves (9th-10th centuries) but which stands out above all with its tall bell tower that can be seen from any corner of the municipality and neighboring municipalities. The bell tower is the most identifying image of Vilanant and very often the undisputed protagonist of the photographs of those who visit the town and those who live there!

And leaving the streets of Vilanant behind, whether by road by car, on sandy paths or following the section of the Manol river, to the south…another gem to discover: TARAVAUS. A small town of just over thirty inhabitants annexed to Vilanant since the nineties. A town with two squares and few streets that the residents take care of in detail every day, filling the corners with flowers. And right in the middle is the Romanesque church of Sant Martí (13th century), still surrounded by the cemetery that makes it a special feature today.

Vilanant and Taravaus, two towns with the Empordà stamp! A few minutes from the capital of the upper Empordà, Figueres, it offers those who live there and those who visit it the essence of a rural town: beauty, silence, landscape and history.
