Cabrera Castle

Cabrera Castle: A Medieval Fortress with a Millennia-Long History

Cabrera Castle, located between Maçanet de Cabrenys and la Vajol, majestically rises above the Roca de Cabrera, offering breathtaking views of Empordà and Alta Garrotxa. With origins dating back to 1003, this ancient fortress has withstood the test of time.

In 1098, the castle was already mentioned in the Llibre Gran dels Feus, and by 1221, it belonged to Beatriu d’Hortal. In 1288, it was captured and destroyed by French forces. The castle’s history has passed through various hands, highlighting 1330 when Simó de Cabrera sold it to Beatriu de Cabrenys, who reconstructed walls and roofs.

Over time, it has seen different owners, like Guillem Galceran de Rocabertí in 1344, and experienced events such as the capture by the French in 1462. Inherited successively by the Paguera and Sorribes families, the castle was already listed as ruined in 1689.

At an altitude of 852 meters, the castle’s remains cover a granite crag, featuring the cistern, the base of a square tower, and walls standing at 2 meters high. With an area of 189 square meters and a perimeter of 76 meters, this construction from the 11th to 14th centuries was part of the border network of the County of Besalú. A visit to this castle is an opportunity to connect with the past and enjoy unparalleled views of Catalonia.
