The church of Santa Maria is located at the highest point of the old town. Built on the site of the old temple, which had been burnt down by pirate raids in 1444 and 1548, it is a late Gothic building begun in the mid-16th century. XVI and finished in the s. XVIII, built with “fish penises” and fishing nights and holidays. Inside we find a prodigious Baroque wooden altarpiece made in 1725 and gilded in 1788, designed by Jacint Morató and Pau Costa. Also noteworthy are seven small Baroque altarpieces from the other chapels, the stone high chair, the organ, the two wooden benches of the town’s consuls and a small Benedictine sink with the inscribed date of 1705. The façade is crowned by a bell tower. square base with an octagonal upper body, and whitewashed like most houses in the town.
