Santa Maria Church in Cadaqués

Discover the Gothic Splendor of Santa Maria Church

The Santa Maria Church, majestic in its elevated position at the highest point of the old town, is a vivid witness to history and faith that withstands the test of time. This construction, erected on the ruins of the ancient temple that fell victim to pirate raids in 1444 and 1548, represents a unique fusion of late Gothic architecture, initiated in the mid-16th century and completed in the 18th century.

Built with the local characteristic “fishermen’s stones” and with the tireless dedication of the inhabitants, this church becomes a monumental testament to community efforts. Inside, a prodigious Baroque wooden altarpiece stands out, a masterpiece conceived in 1725 and splendidly gilded in 1788, the work of the brilliant artists Jacint Morató and Pau Costa.

In addition, the chapels house seven small Baroque altarpieces, each with its own story. Elements such as the stone pulpit, the organ, the wooden benches of the town’s consuls, and a small holy water font from 1705 contribute to the artistic and historical richness of the church.

The facade, crowned by a square-based bell tower that transforms into an octagonal upper section, stands out with its whiteness, in harmony with the painted houses of the town. The Santa Maria Church is not only a place of devotion but also an architectural gem that invites exploration of the richness of its heritage.
