Avinyonet Castle

The oldest document found relating to the castle of Avinyonet dates from the year 1090. In 1257 it became the Order of the Hospital and remained so until 1804. The remains of the castle can be found in noon church. A quadrangular building and a large portal with a semicircular arch, which was probably the main entrance to the fortress, have come to our feet. This portal gives rise to an enclosure with remains of fortification, at noon and the church. Other remains are to the south and on the edge of the church façade. These are vestiges of the walled enclosure that connected with those found in different parts of the town of Avinyonet. Most notable is a tower with a quadrangular floor plan, of which the lower half remains, and a lock is added. The church of Sant Esteve, inside the castle grounds of the hospital order of Avinyonet, is a large building that after several reconstructions, consists of a rectangular nave with the entrance to the east and the altar to the east. ‘west end, upside down orientation in relation to the traditional arrangement of Christian temples.
