The municipality of Llers has a strategic location in the Empordà, dominates the plain and is close to the steps that cross the Pyrenees. For this reason, its population has played an important role in many wars and invasions throughout history. The castle is located at the top of the old town of Llers. It was largely destroyed due to the blast of the gunpowder, located in the parish church, by Republican troops during the retreat in 1939. Today you can visit the remains of the castle of Llers formed by a tower and a rectangular walled enclosure. Remains of several rooms are preserved inside the wall. It is a very homogeneous building, built during the thirteenth century following the traditional Romanesque model, with the central tower and the walled enclosure surrounding it and which was restored between 1981 and 2013.
