Mare de Déu de les Salines

The Mare de Déu de les Salines Sanctuary is located at an altitude of 1,080 m. The building, made up of the chapel, the accommodation, the courtyard and the refuge, stands on a small plateau of land in the middle of the small valley that forms the banks of the Salines, after its source. There is a cave near the sanctuary, where legend has it that, like so many other old wives’ tales, a bull discovered the image of the Virgin Mary. The name “Salines” comes from the salt which was distributed to the livestock. There were salt pans on this small plain; the shepherds put salt on slabs which the cows and sheep consumed when they went up to graze. There are references to the construction of the church in the 12th century and documents dating back to the 13th century. At the end of the 17th century almost the entire sanctuary was rebuilt.
