Monastery of Sant Quirze de Colera

Architectural ensemble formed by the basilica of Sant Quirze, several monastic outbuildings organized around the cloister courtyard, a defense tower and the remains of a wall lock, the church of Santa Maria and the remains of the old hospital. The consecration of the church of the Benedictine monastery to St. Quirze, St. Andrew and St. Benedict was in 935 on another pre-existing one. In the 13th century, its jurisdictional rights were consolidated and it was also a military target and invaded by troops. From the 15th century it began to decline and in 1690 it was in ruins. In 1835 the Empordà liberal general Ramon de Nouvilas bought the property and closed the church for worship. It was declared a National Monument in 1931, although it was still inhabited by farmers, who turned the church into a warehouse and stable until 1979, when several restoration and excavation campaigns also began.
