Portal de la Gallarda

Parallel to the path of the Rec del Molí, is the section of the wall that is in the best condition. They are walls built of stone, bound with lime mortar and in many later reforms built of brick. In the higher areas, the facing reaches up to seven meters. There are several openings arranged in different sections of the wall. Of the eight entrance doors that closed the walled enclosure of the town, the Portal de la Gallarda —from the s. XIII— is the only one left. It was protected by walls and a moat, now known as the Molí irrigation canal, and, via a drawbridge, gave access to Lake Castellón — where legend has it that the monks of the monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes to provide food. Both the door and the base of the wall date from the s. XIII.
