Sant Joan Church

The church of Palau was built between 1022 and 1070, dates between the consecration of the monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes and the first Empordà temples. The church has been renovated and restored over the centuries. Among the most important restorations are those of the early sixteenth century, when a major reform was made due to both the weak internal structure and the population growth that suffered Palau-saverdera. During most of the religious buildings, the church suffered, like most religious buildings, the burning of images and other objects of worship. In addition, the bells were rung to obtain ammunition. It was not until May 1962 that the bells were restored, thanks to the donation of Mr. Lorda. The church was restored by the services of the Diputació de Girona in 1981.
