Sant Llorenç de Sous Monastery

The Sant Llorenç de Sous Benedictine Monastery is documented in 872, under the protection of the Sant Aniol d’Aguja Monastery. It was an important monastery in the county of Besalú during the Romanesque period and reached its maximum splendour around the year 1000, when it became independent from the diocese of Girona. After the major earthquakes of 1427 and 1429 and the gradual decline of its revenue, the monastery fell into disrepair. Today, after several archaeological research campaigns and the fact that its remains have been consolidated, the site is located in a magnificent spot, in which parts of the monastery powerfully evoke its past and do so with sufficient substance to enable us to understand its organisation and structure.
