Sant Salvador de Coquells Chapel

The old church of Sant Salvador de Coquells, now deconsecrated, has a nave with a semi-circular apse that features Romanesque building elements from the 10th-11th centuries. The triumphal arch is semi-circular, with smooth voussoirs. The lintelled entrance has a single semi-circular arch. There is a double-splayed window with monolithic rounded arches near the eastern end of this same wall. The instalment of several modern windows likely replaced the old ones. The church is constructed in rough limestone ashlars, they majority of which align. The first known reference to the church is from 1294, when the prior of Sant Salvador de Coquells sold Bernat Cruquella a house in the Vilanant cellera (a space of land roughly thirty steps around the church that enjoyed special rights and immunities). In 1327, the Bishop of Girona granted the chapel’s ecclesiastical benefices to a clergyman named Berenguer Barber.
