The Jonquerenca Union Society

Throughout the Empordà we find mutual aid societies. These societies were not limited to the charitable mission, but were the center of local cultural and recreational life. The first references to these societies in La Jonquera date from the end of the s. XIX (La Antigua Junquerense and El Antiguo Eco del Pirineo). In 1903, of the five existing companies, four merged into one: the Unió Jonquerenca. They immediately opened a consumption center, that is, a place where they served coffee and other drinks, whose income was used to increase the contributions of members. During the Civil War, the company’s premises were transformed into a hospital. After the war, the Civil Government appointed the Governing Board and resumed its activity under the name of La Unión Junquerense.
