Old hospital and pump house

Discover the Ancient Hospital and Pump House in Peralada

Originally located at the entrance of the town, the ancient medieval hospital of Peralada played a crucial role in providing alms to the poor and preventing the entry of epidemics into the population. The exciting archaeological excavations of 2003 revealed the secrets of this hospital, uncovering a chapel and a cemetery where 116 bodies were exhumed. The most fascinating surprise was finding a small hidden treasure in one of the bodies: 25 gold coins from the 15th century, currently exhibited at the Sant Domènec Cultural Tourism Center.

In 1835, following the disentailment, the building passed into the hands of the Agricultural Syndicate of Peralada, which used the space to store the irrigation pumps of its associates. Hence arose the popular name of Casa de les Bombes. This historical duality makes this place a fascinating witness to Peralada’s past, with its hospital origins and the transition to a key agricultural role in later times. A corner loaded with history and mystery, which we invite you to explore.
