Parish Church of Santa Maria de Portbou

Discover the Parish Church of Santa Maria de Portbou, a church erected by the railway company on the esplanade of the station. Originally, it was a private chapel for the Planàs family, with Claudi Planàs serving as the director of the Tarragona-Barcelona-France railway (TBF). Over time, the church opened its doors to the railway company workers and the parish.

The temple was constructed between 1878 and 1893 by the Barcelona architect Joan Martorell i Montells. In 1933, the Empordà architect Pelai Martínez built a long staircase to overcome the elevation difference between the village and the location of the temple. Behind the altar, there is an altarpiece with a sculpture of the Virgin carved by Frederic Marès. The tabernacle and the cross are the work of the sculptor Domènec Fita i Molat. Explore the rich history and artistic beauty of the Parish Church of Santa Maria de Portbou, a place of worship with a profound connection to railway history and the local community.
