Pre-romanesque chapel of Saint Stephen

PRE-ROMANESQUE CHAPEL OF SAINT STEPHEN

The isolated building known as the Pre-Romanesque Chapel of Saint Stephen is located at the highest point in Palau. Formerly the chapel of the palace, it was connected to this building on the north side. It represents the oldest part of the complex and is the only one that is well-preserved. This Pre-Romanesque church, dating back to the 8th-9th centuries, has a single nave with a transept and trapezoidal apse.

In the layout of the building, the transept is noteworthy, not protruding externally from the walls of the nave. The apse is covered with a barrel vault. Inside the temple, there are two supporting arches for the roofs: the triumphal arch, leading to the presbytery, and the transverse arch, at the point of communication between the nave and the transept.

The church has three doors located on the front, the north wall of the transept, and the south wall of the nave. Since 1835, it has been privately owned, standing out as an architectural gem with a rich history.
