Explore the History of Sant Sadurní Church in Montiró
The Sant Sadurní Church in Montiró carries the remnants of time, with its roots reaching back to the late 13th century. First documented in the diocesan registers of the 14th century, the parish church of Sant Sadurní de Montiró witnessed the changes and tribulations throughout the centuries.
However, the current temple only preserves the apse as a vestige from the Romanesque period. In 1640, the church fell victim to looting and subsequent fire by Spanish soldier troops, in an episode that seems to be a reprisal against Josep de Margarit i de Biure, the leader of Catalan militias, a prominent defender against Philip IV. These events preceded the onset of the Reapers’ War.
In response to the devastation, a commission was formed in August 1640 for the restoration of the church, and in 1683, the Chapel of Sant Crist was erected, a tangible testament to the resilience and faith of the community. Sant Sadurní Church, with its restored splendor, had the ancient parish of Santa Maria de l’Om de Pelacalç as its suffrage since 1691.
Embark on a journey through the corridors of time as you explore this venerable church, with its rich history unfolding at every corner.
