Santa Caterina Hospital and Chapel

The Hospital de Santa Caterina stands as an architectural testament to the past that endures to this day. This Gothic building, likely erected in the 14th or early 15th century, distinguishes itself with a rectangular layout. Its eastern wing is home to the Chapel of Santa Caterina, also of rectangular design.

On the main façade, now elegantly plastered, you’ll find a Gothic portal and a crowned biforate window adorned with trilobed arches and floral decoration on the springers. To the east, another portal with a well-arched half-point arch fulfills its function. As you explore the other walls of this ensemble, you’ll discover additional openings reminiscent of the splendor of the Gothic era.

The Chapel of Santa Caterina, a noteworthy treasure, features a unique characteristic in the region: wooden diaphragm arches and crossbeams. This type of roofing, more common in civil architecture, was introduced from Languedoc in the 13th century and thrived among mendicant orders. Today, Santa Caterina enjoys a new life as a social venue, while the Hospital d’Ordis has been transformed into a private residence.

Explore the historical richness of this exceptional place that reflects bygone times, and discover the unique fusion of Gothic architecture and modern functionality.
