A very obvious social phenomenon in many towns in the Empordà from the second half of the nineteenth century is the creation of charitable societies. Over time, they also became local meeting places and promoters of many recreational and cultural activities. The Unió Maçanenca was founded during the second half of the s. XIX and Josep Azemar was responsible for designing the building at the beginning of this century. It is a ground floor building with double height and one floor. The large rectangular room on the ground floor has a single nave and also has an interior balcony that runs around its perimeter, with the exception of the back of the façade. Its considerable size allows it to develop leisure and social activities in an open and public environment.
